Sophia Stylianou

PROJECT DIRECTOR

AECOM

I’m 39 and joined the construction industry at 21 years old, spurred on by enjoyable experiences helping my Dad in his small construction office. I studied Construction Management and quickly found myself on the builds of luxury hotels, working to become a MRICS and learning everything I could.

I still get a buzz from seeing projects grow out of the ground into beautiful new buildings. I enjoy the new challenges of different projects, seeing clever designs, continually meeting new, like-minded people. Being part of a project, working on it, seeing it come to life, it feels like you’re really connected to that building.

There are challenges for women working in construction. Sometimes, being the only female in the room can feel intimidating, particularly during stressful or emotional meetings. Making friends and gaining a support network can be tricky because women are often overlooked for lunch plans, or that ‘beer after work’ lad chat.

But it’s also an incredibly rewarding industry in which to work. Think about what it is you love: art, maths, science, managing, landscaping, bridges - there’s a role in the construction industry for almost anything.

There will always be new opportunities; the industry is global so you can take it anywhere. If you’re a fiend for knowledge, it’ll keep challenging you and pushing you to grow. You’ll be amazed how much you can learn – and you can take it as far as you like...as far as the moon if you want to. Literally.
