HEAD OF TEMPORARY WORKS ENGINEERING

MULTIPLEX

I’m a Civil Engineer and Director of the UK’s Temporary Works forum. With over 22 years’ experience in construction, I have delivered some of the most prestigious projects in the UK including HS1, Crossrail, and iconic high-rise structures such as 100 Bishopsgate & 22 Bishopsgate.

As an expert in construction engineering, I’m responsible for the overall management of temporary works across all projects for Multiplex Construction Europe and increasing general awareness across the industry.

I am also passionate about raising the profile of women in construction and encouraging more women to enter and stay in an amazing industry.

I have always loved building things and problem solving, be it Lego structures, puzzles or super structures. Construction is an industry that allows me to do what I love on a daily basis.

Not being the tallest person, I managed to be top scorer and President of my university's Basketball Club!

My key skills are people-management, problem-solving, working under pressure, communication, project delivery, mentoring and development of people to be the best they can be.

There is still the stigma in this industry that construction is "just for men" and also a place where you work outdoors in the cold and get covered in mud and dirt. If people fully understood the broad variety of roles available within the construction industry, it would make it a more attractive industry to enter.

The gender pay gap is a huge challenge for women in any industry, construction included. More needs to be done to address this as women's opinions and the knowledge they bring should carry the same weight as their male counterparts.

The generational gap is quite challenging as the older generation may want to speak to the male gender regarding decisions or changes being made as this is how it has always been done (due to lack of female representation)

If you want to do it, just go for it. Embrace the challenges and don't be afraid. There are many people who will assist you on your journey, men included. Be confident in yourself and you own capabilities, your ideas and opinions are equally as valid as anyone else's.
