STRATEGY MANAGER, HEAVY CIVILS

BECHTEL

I am responsible for developing and driving our global strategy for the heavy civils business line across infrastructure planning, design, and construction. I previously held Construction and Project Management Leadership roles at Bechtel, High Speed 2 and EDF across different industries. I hold a Masters of Civil Engineering from University of Nottingham, UK, and am currently reading a masters in Major Programme Management at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, UK. I am a Chartered Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and Chartered Project Professional with the Association for Project Managers.

I was attracted to the industry by the opportunity to shape the built environment around us. Civil Engineering and working in major projects truly has allowed me to do this, and contribute to improved transport and energy infrastructure in the UK, and around the world.

As a chartered engineer you might be surprised that I struggled with maths during school. I persevered and it ended up being one of my best grades at A-Level. The technical side of engineering is just one facet of our industry. Increasingly, stakeholder-management and working with communities are what we spend a considerable amount of time on.

I find it incredibly rewarding helping grow and develop people alongside delivering projects.

There can be a lot of unconscious biases at play with women. It is something which is being tackled across the industry but not as fast as we’d like.

Be curious, be passionate and explore the opportunities available. The industry is growing and we need more people from a range of backgrounds. Engineering is one way in but there are many successful men and women who have unconventional backgrounds and are just as successful.
