JUNIOR STRUCTURAL ENGINEER

CIVIC ENGINEERS

I am a Civil Engineering student at the University of Bath, currently working at Civic Engineers for my placement year.

I have always been passionate about problem-solving and maths-based solutions. During my A-Levels, I completed a project called “Utilising Building Facades to Manipulate Natural Resources: Which Methods are the Future of Sustainable Engineering?” and my work on this cemented my interest in sustainable engineering.

I’ve been working in the Structures team at Civic Engineers for seven months and my current project focus is on sustainable retrofit design. Having completed two years of my course so far, I’m looking forward to returning to university to further expand my knowledge, and to implement the practical skills that I have learnt this year.

A significant challenge I have faced within the construction industry is the under-representation of women. I regularly visit schools and give talks at online events aimed at teenage girls, to encourage them to continue their studies of STEM-based subjects and pursue a career in engineering. I am determined to reduce inequality and break gender stereotypes within the construction industry throughout my career.

If you’re considering joining the industry, I would say don’t be afraid of having big goals. Start researching into topics that interest you and the best path for you will follow.
